Can You Hear Me Now? Good.

For $4 a minute, you can send your message to the stars... Really.

And for a mere $19.95, you can send an email message... Really.

I ran across the link in an old issue of Mass High Tech. Sure, it's entertainment. But, it's real - and the dish broadcasting the messages is in nearby Connecticut. The idea itself is kinda cool. SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) just does a lot of listening. This reverses the direction and sends the message.

Will anyone hear it? Well...that's rather doubtful. So it's more like buying an acre on the moon. It's the sci-fi equivalent of a pet rock.

I think what would be more interesting is if someone would record and catalog those messages. What is being broadcast? Are they religious messages? Messages of peace? Threats? Pleas for help? It would seem to me that the messsages we would attempt to send would say more about us than we realize.
