Jasper

Jasper is a siliceous sedimentary rock which was formed in an ocean environment. Its color is very variable and is composed mainly of chalcedony and quartz with hematite, pyrolusite, clay, and sometimes calcite. In the USA, jasper is found in the regions of Lake Superior and in the Jurassic of California, and the variety novaculite, from Arkansas, is used for making hones and whetstones. The variety containing volcanic material (porcellanite) is found in England and Michigan (USA).

The folk names of jasper include Gug (Assyrian) and Rainbringer (American Indian). Jasper's many magical natures and uses vary with the colors and kinds of jasper used. Generally, jasper is worn or carried to promote mental processes and to restrain dangerous desires or whims that could lead to hazardous situations. It is a protective stone, against both physical and non-physical hazards. It is also worn to relieve pain, especially during childbirth. Works well in conjunction with Opals. Recommended as an aid to quick thinking and is said to help one endure stress.

In the fourth century Jasper was reputed to drive away evil spirits and protect those who wore it from the bites of venomous creatures. An anonymous German author of the eleventh or twelfth century claimed that if Jasper is placed on a snakebite, the venom would be drawn from the wound. Jasper was used in the breastplates of the high priests in the time of Aaron.

Red Jasper ~ (Energy: Projective, Planet: Mars, Element: Fire) Carry this to guard against poison and to cure fevers. A fine protective stone, it is utilized in defensive magic, for it sends negativity back to the original sender. Worn by young women to promote beauty and grace. It is much like Bloodstone in its link to the circulatory system. Some say it is beneficial in battling diseases of the blood and detoxifying blood-rich organs like the liver. Its stimulating energy can bring problems to light before they are a threat.

Green Jasper ~ (Energy: Receptive, Planet: Venus, Element: Earth) This is a healing amulet and health talisman. Use to promote the body's healing or to ward off ill-health. Wear to halt hallucinations and to promote restful sleep. It is also worn to become more sympathetic to other's emotional and mental states. It is especially suited to tempering aspects of your life that have taken on too great an importance. Green Jasper also works best on ailments of the upper torso, digestive tract, and the cleansing organs.

Brown Jasper ~ (Energy: Receptive, Planet: Saturn, Element: Earth) Wear Brown Jasper for centering and grounding, especially after heavy magical ritual, psychic or spiritual work. If you tend to have trouble staying grounded to the point of endangering your physical life, wear a brown jasper. Brown Jasper is sometimes called Picture Jasper. Brown Jasper can benefit ailments that result from environmental pollution. It is said to boost the immune system and assist in extracting pollutants and toxins from the body. Keep in mind that this process takes some time since Jaspers work slowly (and therefore, thoroughly). Brown Jasper is also said to improve the skin. It can help you to become more ecologically aware. Brown Jasper is also well suited for use in attempting to access past life information.
