While wandering through the graveyard (and whistling), I found that there were a number of Borden Sites. I found about 5 batches of Bordens (say that 5 times fast) before I found the AJ Borden site.
Unfortunately, the pics from this camera don't come out as sharp as the ones from my Cannon, so I'll have to describe the details for you. At the bottom (in big letters) you can see "AJ Borden" ... and on the sides are inscribed the names and dates of the family buried in this plot. To the left of the site marker (closer to the road) are the headstones for Andrew's parents. To the right of the site marker (beneath a large tree) are the bodies of Andrew, his first wife, his second wife, and three children.
Not much is ever said about the third sister. She died early. The two sisters (Lizzie and Emma) are buried apart from the other four. Notice I said "bodies"... The bodies and the skulls of Andrew and Abbey are buried separately. The bodies are beneath the headstones at a depth of 6 feet. The skulls are buried nearby (by the footpath leading to the site) and are buried at a depth of only 3 feet. They have had to have police guard the graves every now and then to prevent anyone from digging up the skulls and using them in rituals...
Today someone had visited the site and placed pennies on all the headstones. There were also some clam shells placed at Lizzie's grave. The tour guide said that until about 5 years ago, someone would come in at night and plant geraniums around all the headstones. Whoever was doing that must have died, because it stopped suddenly. She also noted that when people leave flowers on only one grave, it's always for Lizzie...never for the victims....
