Everyone saw the map during the election. We're all familiar with the blue and red states. And we all know that for the past few elections, it's come down to a battle over one state. Last time it was Florida. This time it was Ohio.
How did this ever happen? Do you remember things ever being this close? Anyone notice something missing from the 2004 map?
At the risk of giving someone I can't stand a few clicks in their stats... you can CLICK HERE to see the 1972 - 2000 election results.
So whatever happened to the SOUTHERN DEMOCRATS? They came out for Carter in 76. Some of them came out for Clinton in 92 and 96. Then they disappeared. They were gone for Gore in 2000 and Kerry in 04. Where did they go?
I remember learning in history class (early 70s) about the Democratic South. It was something that was thought to be solid back then. Where did it go? Why is it something we can't count on anymore? Are people THAT tied to religion that the important issues of the economy, war and equality for all Americans takes a back seat?
The states that went for Bush (the entire south) mainly voted on 'moral values' issues. Are we electing a President or a Minister?
The more I think about it, the more I realize that Americans vote with their hearts and not their heads. It's not who they 'think' would make a better President...but, who they 'feel' would be a better President. How they feel determines what they think (instead of the other way around).
There's a battle to be fought for the hearts and minds...of the AMERICAN people...not the Iraqis. We're the ones in danger. We're the ones who are miserable. We're the ones losing our children daily in securing 'freedom' for another country -- while we lose more and more of our own freedoms here.
And all that doesn't matter to 51% of the people. All they care about is that Bush is against any type of abortion and any type of recognition for gay couples. That makes him a saint in their eyes. I wonder just how hungry and poor they have to become in order to realize that THE ECONOMY is much more important than telling other people how they must live their lives?
One can only hope.
