Inspiration

You knew I could do it
I waited long to hear that
As I have heard it before

Every time I opened a book
Tired from a long work day
If I just study hard enough
If I climb the right mountain
If I write the right poem
The world's clapping hushed
Compared to the sound of
You knew I could do it

My own doubts crowded me
As I tightly hugged my pillow
And listened for your heartbeat
And felt for your presence
And looked for time to pass
I pushed back my fears
Remembering you have said
You knew I could do it

And I gave the test my all
This cluster of questions
Then the exam ended
Then the grading occurred
Then the passing score
Tightly bundled joy spilled
Into email that begged to hear
You knew I could do it
