Version 4.1 - 1.3 TCP/UDP/IP Protocols

This is another vague item on the blueprint. Really, this helps no one. There is no way you're going to see anything this basic on the exam. All of the applications that use TCP and UDP are covered in section 3.0. And "IP" - are they talking routed or routing protocols? Routing protocols are covered in section 1.5. So again, I'm at a loss as to why they put this here.

So all I can do is review the basics again. TCP is connection-oriented and therefore considered reliable. UDP is connectionless and is considered unreliable "best effort" transport. IP is made up of TCP and UDP (and is different from ICMP and ARP). IP can be IPv4 or IPv6. Addressing and headers for both were already covered in section 1.1.

Ah - here's an old chestnut:

TCP and UDP are Layer 4. IP is Layer 3. Really - I'm struggling to see how this was listed as a separate item on the blueprint. I even went to the Cisco Documentation to see if I could find some design notes or Tech Support Q & A that might be interesting. The documentation was sparse. I also double checked the Exam Guide and there was not much coverage there either. Oh...note: TCP has a fixed length 20 byte header.

The other thing that I'm doing is looking at the 14% for the entire 1.0 topic. I think anything that could be squeezed out of this one should not present a problem. Putting it to bed and moving onto the next topic.
