Fighting Back

When I was a kid, I was known for being pretty tough - especially for a girl. I didn't pull hair, punch with my wrist, or sissy kick when I got into fights. I punched like a boy. And with me playing sports all the time, I was pretty strong. I had to be ... I was the eldest.

This strength was a blessing and a curse. It was a blessing because I didn't have to fight so much. All I had to do was threaten to fight and most people backed off. Peace through strength.

The down side of this was not with those my own age, it was with those who were much younger. Those my own age had enough sense not to provoke or challenge me. I wasn't a bully...I just didn't take any shit from anyone. As long as someone didn't bother me, I didn't bother them. For some reason this idea didn't trickle down to the younger crowd. I don't know where they got this idea, but they thought because I was older, it "wasn't fair" for me to hit them. What this is supposed to mean is that I'm not going to go over to some little kid, punch them in the mouth and take their lunch money. That's not fair. I understand that. What I don't understand is how they thought it was OKAY to hit me and think that I wouldn't fight back...because they were younger and I wasn't supposed to hit them. Where's the fairness in that?

And now it's happening on a much larger scale. How unfair of the United States to bomb poor little Afghanistan... That's so unfair - the US is a superpower, they shouldn't pick on such a little country... WHAT??? If you recognize that the US is such a superpower, then your spiritual leaders shouldn't declare "holy" war on us... If you think it's such a horror for (supposedly) 200 of your people to die from our bombs, you shouldn't kill over 5,000 of our people with hijacked planes!

Oh, and if you think that fighting back is wrong because "we're stronger," consider this: we're using conventional weapons. Yes, they may be high tech. Yes, they may be more sophisticated than the bombs you have. But we have nuclear weapons. You don't.

I think we're already being "nice." And that's without even considering the food drops.
