Our instructor is the third CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) I've met personally. I've always wanted the CISSP, yet I've never been able to find time to squeeze in the studying. It's going to take a lot of work.
This cert requires you to know and understand 10 "Bodies of Knowledge" for the 6 hour exam. I've had experience and training in most of those areas. But, I've had a hard time finding a way to set aside such a large block of study time. There are a few others that I know in a similar situation.
As I'm pondering this, I hear a small, still voice in the back of my mind. It's an old email message from FlyLady saying that you can do just about anything for 15 minutes at a shot. Hmmm...why do those two thoughts occur simultaneously? I get out my calculator.
If I had taken 15 minutes to study...twice a day....only on weekdays.... Holey Moley! Over the past two years, I would have had a couple of hundred hours of study time... I may be on to something.
I run the idea by one of my coworkers. He has a valid point. How much of what you learned last year is still fresh enough in your mind to be tested on it? Uh, not a lot. BUT... Enough that it would take less time to prepare for the exam when I finally get the chance.
Ah, ha! I've always wanted to create a study group (email list) for this (or something similar). I think the vision is taking shape in my mind. It's a cross between the FlyLady reminders and the Tech Tip of The Day.
There are ten bodies of knowledge. Two emails per day. Five days per week. This can work....and this can be a lot of work. I'll never get time during work to initiate those emails (but I could find time to read them). I need a script! Yeah, that's the ticket! So I found a script that will email posts to the list at the designated hour. I could put the posts in on the weekend and read them during the week. Reinforcement is good. Rut, roh. The scripts are in a foreign language. Hmmm...well, that doesn't matter. A variable is a variable. I'm going to translate and see if they work.
It may take a year or two before I've got enough of a foundation to sit and study for this exam. It may take that long before I can find the time. But in the meanwhile, I'll be moving forward....
