Remember how you used to feel
Waiting for Her to call--
Phone next to the bed
Knowing She was very upset
And all you wanted to do
Was reach out and hug Her
Like the magic you felt
Would cure all that pain
And remember how you
Stared at the phone
As though wishes were rings
Didn't you know how loud
Silence sounded?
And time!
A minute never lasted so long
And with so many of those
In a worried hour.
NOw we could mark this night
By how many hours a minute can last
Or how many million worries
Could be in a night
Or by the number of reasons why
The phone didn't ring
You could still make that call to Guiness
With any of those stats
How many times did you hear that dial tone
Just to make sure the phone still worked?
How many times did you replace
Each reason shot down by blatant reality?
How many times did your reasons echo
Like lost notes in a hollow heart?
And in spite of your encyclopedia of hurt
You say you'll let me know how the evening turns out
You must have just forgotten.
