I saw where I wanted to live
But I waited
Because I thought someone else
Already owned that land
And everything on it
So I rented an apartment
That was very much like
The place I wanted to be
And the lease expired
Just as I found out
It was possible to build a home.
She rented a space
And laid a rug on it
Borrowed a few chairs
Covered the walls and said
Come on over.
And you went
To marvel at your new home
Because you didn't know
The difference between
A condo and an apartment.
I dug a foundation
And everyone laughed
To see me in such a hole.
It took years to get the mix
To make the cement
But I gathered all I needed
And mixed it pail by pail
Pouring a solid foundation
And everyone laughed
To see dirt on my face
But I wore it like badges
Of what I have accomplished
You drove by me in my work clothes
On your way to the apartment
That was already completed
Built for someone else
But repainted especially for you
Isn't that special?
I patiently carry each load of lumber
That I need to meet the blueprints
Carefully measuring each piece
Putting them in place
Some are harder to place than others
but eventually they fit
And one night that should have been
But never was
Found you in an apartment alone
And when your anger swelled
You punched a wall
Only to find little resistance
Since nothing was behind it.
And everyone laughed
When I made the roof so big
They said I'd attract vagrants
But it fit the house
She returned to find you crying
Over the hole
Like it was your fault
And she believed it
You knocked down
What she had set up
I guess it is your fault
For not waiting
Paint never dries that hard
But it does look pretty wet
And everyone laughed
When I panelled the bedroom
Because I nailed it with kisses
And everyone knows
That you don't kiss inanimate objects
But it kept the panelling up
And was much more enjoyable
Than hammering it in place
And everyone laughed
As I waited for the furniture
They thought would never arrive
It came piece by piece
Until everything was there
Then you came
Home.
